THE ARCHIVES OF THE WEEK - Legends on the menu of our selection: these men have left their mark on history in the political or sporting field.


A true legend during his lifetime. We started the week with the birth on July 181918, in South Africa, of the political leader Nelson Mandela. A life of combat. A leading figure in the fight against apartheid and racism, the world's most famous prisoner, his country's first black president, he has become the world icon of racial reconciliation. He calls for building a “Rainbow Nation” upon his release from prison. When he left active political life after his presidential mandate in 1999, his aura was such that he attracted visitors from everywhere, political figures and show business figures. All come to meet, greet the wise old man… and immortalize the event with a photograph. Honored, celebrated globally, he received more than 250 international decorations. In 2012, the United Nations established a Nelson Mandela Day, the day of his birth. A man of peace, he occupies a special place in the history of Africa and of humanity.

On July 18, 1918, the political leader Nelson Mandela was born in Mvevo, in the province of Eastern Cape, in South Africa. Historical leader of the African National Congress (ANC), he spent 27 years in an apartheid prison. Released in 1990, he became the first black president of South Africa four years later. It is through his conquests and his wars that he entered history. Alexander the Great was born on July 21, 356 BC. JC in Macedonia. Son of King Philippe II and Olympias, he ascended the throne at the age of 20. Desirous of uniting the West and the East, this warrior strategist unites ancient Greece, then builds up in a decade a vast empire, which extends from Greece to India. And thus allows the dissemination and influence of Greek culture in the Middle East. He died at the age of 33 and from Antiquity, perceived as a hero, this insatiable conqueror became a myth.

Insatiable conqueror, competitor at heart, indefatigable attacker, such is this French cycling legend. On July 22, 1979, the young Bernard Hinault won the Tour de France for the second time in a row. He is 24 years old and a thirst for victories will not leave him. The Breton sportsman, with a strong character, is thus building a career with an impressive track record: 216 victories as a professional - including five Tours de France, three Tours d'Italie, two Tours d'Espagne, a title of Champion of France, and a World Road Champion title. An emblematic figure of French and world cycling, he ended his sports career at the age of 32 ... but without really straying from the world of cycling.

"Le Blaireau" again winner of the big loop. On July 22, 1979 Bernard Hinault, the legend of French cycling, won at 24, for the second year in a row, the Tour de France: seven stage wins and 13 minutes ahead of the Dutch Joop Zoetemelk. He made the Tour with “his yellow guard” of Renault-Gitane. In Paris "the last meters were for the leader: he took risks, in the face of the Flemish foxes, to win them. There is James Dean in him.
