Despite its title, and the fact that it is signed Martin Scorsese, no mafioso here, but an intrigue based on historical facts, in the American metropolis in the mid-nineteenth century: the struggle between the different communities in a new country, but where inequalities persist. A masterpiece, with Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz. Available on 20.

"Proxima"

Sarah, a French astronaut, is selected for a long-term mission aboard the International Space Station. The dream of her life, but at the same time a real heartbreak: she is the mother of a little girl, Stella, from whom she will have to separate for the time of training, then for her flight… Alice Winocour chooses to show behind the scenes by accurately describing the daily life of an astronaut. A documentary aspect reinforced by the fact that a number of scenes were shot on real locations. Eva Green, who has undergone part of the training of a real astronaut, proves to be as convincing as a mother sorry to leave her little one as an adventurer determined to impose herself in a very masculine environment. Available on 4.

"Midway"

June 1942. Americans are just recovering from the Pearl Harbor disaster. Opposite, the Japanese decide to crush their adversaries once and for all, around the Midway Islands, in order to clear the road to the west coast of the United States. But the American secret services have wind of this strategy and are repositioning their forces… Roland Emmerich, familiar with big budget productions (“Independence Day”…) retraces one of the biggest naval air battles of the Second World War. As usual, the director multiplies the Dantesque scenes, including the attack on Pearl Harbor, and offers superb aerial combat. Available on 21.

NETFLIX

"Serious"

Garance is a frail young woman who joins a veterinary school. Subjected to a severe hazing, she finds herself forced, she who is a convinced vegetarian, to eat raw meat. A trauma that triggers in her an unexpected taste for cannibalism! More than a simple horror film, even if it includes very gory scenes, "Grave" goes through several genres, horror, but also comedy and drama. All benefiting from the involved game of the two main actors, including the astonishing Garance Marillier. Available the 1st.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

"Jack and the Mechanics of the Heart"

Jack is born with a frozen heart before being saved by a midwife who grafts a clock to him instead. From now on condemned not to undergo strong emotions and especially not to fall in love, at the risk of seeing the fragile mechanism which keeps him alive to stop, he nevertheless falls in love with a street singer. Paced by great songs, the film, due to Mathias Malzieu, from the Dionysos group, benefits from an incredibly inventive animation, which intelligently mixes genres. Sometimes full of poetry, like the great classics like "the King and the Bird", sometimes close to manga. Available on 6.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

"Project Power"

A new drug is circulating in the streets of New Orleans. Once injected into a human body, it allows, for five minutes, to benefit from a superpower, different depending on the person. A wave of crimes then swept over the city. New variation on the superhero theme, this film stars Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-LeVitt. Available on 14.

"Fast & Furious 8"

While spending his honeymoon in Cuba, Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) finds himself forced to betray his team and work for a cyberterrorist, Cypher. This new episode of the successful saga attempts a more psychological approach. Toretto is no longer the monolithic block, the confident alpha male, of the previous seven episodes… In front of him, Cypher (astonishing Charlize Theron), a sociopathic hacker, leads the dance. But that the fans are reassured. The specifications of a "Fast & Furious", namely car chases, stunts and explosions, are completely fulfilled. With again a disproportionate bidding, involving in particular a tank or a nuclear submarine! Available on 16.

OCS

"My brother"

In this film, the Parisian rapper Mohamed Sylla, alias MHD (recently released on bail, after several months in prison for his alleged involvement in a murder), plays Teddy, a teenager accused of the murder of his father, who tyrannized over the whole family . While awaiting his judgment, he was sent to a closed educational center (CEF). Signed Julien Abraham, the director of “the Pink City”, “Mon Frère” accurately describes the daily life and the relationships between young boys and their educators in a CEF. A film carried by an MHD that is both sober and convincing. Available on 12.

"What have we done to the Good Lord again?"

This sequel to one of the biggest successes in French cinema does not change a winning recipe. But it is working, on the other hand, to put its hands in the engine to invent new connections. Festival of replicas ("I'm going to poison him, Bokassa!"), Frankly comical situations, this variation on the same theme, which does not deprive itself of a new burst of spat between the brothers-in-law, skillfully continues its mission of fraternity, and Christian Clavier is exceptional there. Available on 19.

"Just the end of the world"

A young man (Gaspard Ulliel) leaves to join his family whom he has not seen for a long time. One last time, because he's going to die. Of what, we will never know. We discover in a house in the countryside, a family on the verge of chaos where the arrival of the prodigal son causes great tensions. We plunge with delight into this family closed-door, with permanent tension, with hard-hitting dialogues, which alternates clashes and moving sequences. Available on 21.

EDITOR'S RATING: 4/5

"I Feel Good"

While she has not seen him for years, Monique, who heads an Emmaus community near Pau, sees her brother Jacques unloading in a bathrobe and mules. This good-for-nothing wants "to be successful in business." One day, he has an idea to make his dream come true: he suggests that Emmaus members sell them low-cost cosmetic surgery treatments in Romania… There is indeed a slight drop in the pace in the middle of the film, but “I Feel Good ”is a humanist comedy that has substance: it talks about materialism, success, solidarity, appearance… And we feast on the Moreau-Dujardin tandem like the crisp dialogues written by Delépine and Kervern. Available on 26.

DISNEY +

"Freaky Friday"

Tess, a psychologist on the verge of remarrying, is at daggers drawn with her teenage daughter, Anna, who has a hectic schooling and who thinks only of her rock band. The day before Tess's wedding, a Chinese spell has unexpected consequences: Tess ends up in her daughter's body, and vice versa! Forced to hide the truth from those around them, mother and daughter have to deal with the situation and solve problems that are not, or older, their age. Based on a subject already covered a thousand times in cinema, “Freaky Friday” plays the humorous card, and gags and comic situations abound. Available on 6.
