Latinx actors react to their underrepresentation at the Emmys 2020

The list of 2020 Emmy nominees is more diverse, but Latino representation is very low. John Leguizamo and Selenis Leyva reacted.

After the strong Black Lives Matter movement of this 2020 caused by the murder of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25, some changes have begun to be seen, at least in the entertainment industry.

Times magazine conducted an analysis of the racial, ethnic, and gender diversity of Emmy nominees in the 19 top categories from 2015 to 2019. The result revealed that the prestigious award had not been representative of the public as they predominated white men.

Analysis of this 2020's nominations shows that 33% of the nominees in the acting categories are African-American, compared to 14% in previous years.

In general, African-American artists represented 37% of the total nominees, which meant 6% more than in the period from 2015 to 2019.

Feminist movements also made progress, in the script and direction categories, from 25% of female presence in 2019 to 36%; something really very remarkable given that in previous years women only represented 13% of the total number of nominees.

But there is one sector that continues to be underrepresented in Emmy nominees, as according to the Times report there are no Latino artists nominated in the main and supporting categories in comedy or drama series in the last six years despite that they represent 18% of the population.

Given this, Colombian actor John Leguizamo , who also has US nationality, protested on his Twitter account, "Why can't Latinx have a piece of the pie? We are the largest ethnic group in America and we are missing. as if we didn't exist! "

Cuban actress Selenis Leyva , who participated in the Netflix series "Orange Is the New Black," also reacted, "Well, we should start by supporting each other and celebrating our entire Latino community. Many of us don't, and I repeat, don't support each other. each other. Let's unite to make noise and the situation will change! Latinos in Hollywood have to stop this crap and unite. Yes, I said it. Likewise, the actress Dascha Polanco , who is originally from the Dominican Republic and was Leyva's partner in "Orange Is the New Black", showed her position, "If it is just us talking about it, nobody cares. It is the silence of those who They fight for equality, but only equality. Diversity, but diverse enough to include itself. "
