ROME - Starting from June, the first signs of recovery for the fishing sector began, with the return of more stable prices and a level of demand in the norm, thanks also to the progressive reopening of the restaurant. This is what emerges from the report on the fishing sector carried out by BMTI, recalling that in the three months of lockdown fishing activities in Italy were blocked due to the low demand for fresh fish products due precisely to the closure of the catering activities, the canteens and hotels. In fact, from March to May there was a 40% drop in landings compared to the respective months of 2019.

Equally heavy was the decrease in consumption of fresh fish products which collapsed in March by 30% in volume and 29% in value compared to the same month in 2019. In addition, the reduction in demand was accompanied by an increase in purchases of fish products frozen, processed and preserved (+ 22%). This trend was also confirmed by the drop in Italian imports of fresh products in the first weeks of the health emergency (-18.7%), also caused by the collapse of tourism. The low fishing activity and the decrease in demand, highlights the report, also led to the stoppage of activity by operators in the wholesale fish markets, where the prices showed a fluctuating trend in the first part of the quarter.
