Television: France 4 will not close before 2021

2020-08-03T19:40:18.199Z

The two public channels France 4 and France Ô will ultimately not stop broadcasting this weekend, contrary to what was initially planned.

The situation was becoming ubiquitous. She finally clarified. The public channels France 4, devoted to young people, and France Ô, that of the Overseas Territories, were to go out definitively this Sunday, August 9, following a decision dating from 2018. A closing date that had not been chosen by chance: it must have been that of the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics. The global sporting event, postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was to be broadcast on all the channels of the France Televisions group, France 4 and France Ô included.

After months of procrastination at the top of the State, Roselyne Bachelot has decided. When she was appointed rue de Valois in early July, the Minister of Culture had promised a quick decision on this burning issue. She should formalize her arbitration in the middle of the week. According to our information, the minister has decided that France Ô will finally stop broadcasting at the end of August, while France 4 is gaining a year's suspension. Except for the umpteenth rebound, the latter should therefore be extinguished in the summer of 2021.

The Covid-19 has changed the game

This clarification should make life easier for employees of the public group. With less than a week from the deadline, the management teams of the two channels continue their work as if nothing had happened, each week preparing a schedule of programs and even imagining an offer for the start of the school year. "As long as the government does not publish a decree formalizing the closure, we continue to work," blows the executive of one of the two channels.

Announced in June 2018 by the former Minister of Culture Françoise Nyssen, this double closure should allow France Télévisions to save money. In 2018, the France 4 program schedule cost 40 million euros per year. But the Covid-19 has changed the situation. By breaking its programming from the start of confinement to offer many educational content, France 4 recalled in extremis its role as a public service.

To the point of changing the minds of parliamentarians from all political stripes, who fought to save the soldier France 4. A vision shared by the new minister. “The service was remarkable, with its youth programs during the crisis, because not everyone has digital tools,” Roselyne Bachelot was enthusiastic about.
