(ANSA) - TEHRAN, 09 AUG - The national committee for the fight against coronavirus in Iran has announced a series of restrictions for the ceremonies of Muharram, the Islamic month of mourning for Shiites, which culminate on the tenth day with processions and sacred representations of the Ashura to commemorate the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein.
"The ceremonies must only be held in open places, observing the physical spacing of at least two meters and wearing masks," the committee stressed. Processions and gazebos where food and drinks are traditionally served are also prohibited. The authorities invite the faithful to resort to alternative methods to celebrate the anniversary - one of the most important for Shiites - such as attending online events.
The month of Muharram begins on August 20 and Ashura falls on August 29. (HANDLE).
