(ANSA-AFP) - ATHENS, AUGUST 09 - Five people, including a child, have died and another person is reported missing on the Greek island of Evia, also called Euboea, hit by torrential rains and floods that damaged dozens of houses and made the roads impassable. The island is located not far from the coast, 100 kilometers north-east of Athens.
An eight-month-old baby was found dead in a flooded house in Politika village, a fire brigade spokesman said. The parents were left unharmed. Hours earlier, a man and woman, both in their 80s, were found unconscious by firefighters in two houses in the same village, the spokesman said.
Deputy Minister of Civil Protection Nikos Hardalia had previously said that five people had died and two were missing. But a spokesperson for local emergency services later told AFP that "a woman has been found alive, while rescuers are looking for the second missing person, a man." The woman, reports the news agencyANA, was identified by a helicopter. She had been washed away by the water in her home in Bourtsi village.
Two other deceased people lived in the same village, a 74-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his "deep sorrow for the loss of life" and said he will visit the island on Monday, the second largest after Crete.
