A policewoman who was not on duty at the time was seriously injured, police chief Peter Newsham told journalists on Sunday. According to previous knowledge, there were three shooters. Local media reported that a semi-automatic weapon had also been fired.
It was initially unclear what exactly had happened at the street festival in a residential area in the southeast of the city and why shots had been fired on Sunday morning. Mayor Muriel Bowser told journalists that there were apparently hundreds of participants at the event, which is a violation of the city's corona requirements. In addition, drinking alcohol in public is prohibited, added Bowser.
According to the Washington Post, there have been at least 115 cases of murder or manslaughter in the capital this year. At the end of July, an incident caused a sensation in which nine people were shot in broad daylight on a busy street in the northeast of the city. One person succumbed to their wounds.
