The watermelon in the province of Latina is a driving force of the rural economy, so much so that the producers are about 400, engaged in the cultivation of 4 thousand hectares, with an average production of 700 watermelons per hectare and a strong export in Northern Europe and in the East. A fruit-symbol of summer which, according to the president of the Latina Ortaggi cooperative Claudio Filosa, "is of quality when it has red pulp, and does not have cavities and internal filaments. When cut it must also be firm, crunchy and not release water".
The newborn competition sees a local watermelon at the center of a cultural challenge, born to enhance the fruit beyond the gastronomic delicacy. "Whether you are an eater of the Pontine watermelon - specify the promoters - or have tasted the watermelon on its way to any destination in the world, the watermelon must bring back the taste that in both cases you will carry inside". Participation in the competition is open to everyone, free of charge, without any registration fee. Leopere entered in the Competition must be unpublished, but published in paper or digital form (e-book or web).
