In some supermarkets and shops, customers now receive blue instead of white receipts at the checkout. What it's all about.

  • Since the beginning of the year, receipts have been mandatory in Germany. But that's not all that has changed for consumers.
  • In some shops the receipts are now bluish instead of white.
  • What it's all about.

The receipt has been mandatory since January 1, 2020 . However, many customers do not want to keep their receipts * at all, but simply put them in their pockets - only to throw them away in the trash shortly afterwards. And the environment?

Blue tokens are reported to be more environmentally friendly - they are easier to dispose of. Anyone shopping at Alnatura , Edeka or Netto , among others , is already familiar with the blue receipts, according to an article on the sustainability portal Utopia.de. Some of the traders introduced them a few months ago - including some smaller stores.

According to Utopia.de, the bluish notes mentioned have two decisive advantages over conventional receipts: “They do not contain any chemical color developers. This makes them less of a problem for the environment and health. They can also be disposed of differently than normal receipts, ”writes the portal. Conventional receipts do not belong in the waste paper , informs the portal, but in the residual waste. "The blue receipts, on the other hand, can be put in the waste paper, so they can be recycled again."

Criticism of the receipt requirement in shops - "unbureaucratic" and "superfluous"

Since January 1st, retailers with electronic cash register systems have had to give their customers a receipt for each purchase without being asked - in the supermarket, but also in the pharmacy , at the hairdresser's or, for example, at the bakery . This is to prevent tax fraud. Retail and trade had criticized the regulation as bureaucratic and superfluous.

However, there is currently a "non-objection regulation" for retrofitting electronic cash registers with the so-called "technical security device" (TSE) until the end of September, as reported by the German Press Agency (as of July 19). Until then, retailers would not receive any reminders or fines if they have not yet installed the POS system.

Must always be a Bon print? "No. Electronic output formats, for example via app , are also accepted ”; it says on "Spiegel Online". At least the dealer has to "ban" every sale. “The customer can do without printouts and take them away.” Many consumers now voluntarily forego a receipt in order to protect the environment.
