Many people in need of care are entitled to a lump sum for the disabled. This also applies if you do not have a severely disabled ID card. And in future, specifying the degree of care will be even more worthwhile for tax purposes.
Berlin (dpa / tmn) - People in need of care with care level 4 or 5 who do not have a severely handicapped ID can still claim the handicapped lump sum in their income tax return. The highest deduction amount of currently 3700 euros applies to these care levels.
In order for the lump sum to be taken into account in the tax return, the field "blind / constantly helpless" must be ticked in the "extraordinary burdens" annex.
If you make your tax return with the help of a tax program, you should go to the "Disability" path and make the appropriate information. "In order to benefit from the lump sum, people in need of care must submit the decision from the long-term care insurance fund about care levels 4 or 5 to the tax office with their tax return," explains Isabel Klocke from the taxpayers' association. This applies at least in the first year of the application.
In future, this will be even more worthwhile for those in need of care, because the flat-rate amounts for the disabled will be doubled from 2021. The new deduction amount of 7,400 euros is then also likely to be available to those in need of care with care level 4 or 5.
If the costs for care are higher than the lump sum, these can be deducted individually as extraordinary expenses. "If you decide in favor of this solution, you have to collect and keep all invoices in case the tax office wants to check them," advises Klocke to all those concerned.
