Storms hit some regions in west and southwest Germany on Wednesday. Rescue workers were on a large scale in Bonn. "We have a lot of flooded cellars, we have a lot of fallen trees. At the moment the land is under," a police spokesman told the German press agency in the evening.

The meteorologists of the German Weather Service (DWD) had at times before severe thunderstorms in parts of

  • North Rhine-Westphalia,

  • Baden-Württemberg,

  • Rhineland-Palatinate

  • and the Saarland warned.

Flooding of cellars and streets, damage from hail and lightning damage are possible, it said.

In Bonn, the fire brigade and police are therefore in action in many places. Shortly after 6 p.m., a storm with heavy rain, storms and thunderstorms had hit the city. A traffic light was also overturned, power cables were hanging down. The Bonn fire brigade tweeted in the evening that there were still around 200 open locations in the entire city.

A WDR reporter posted a video from the Bonn-Kessenich district, where a street had turned into a raging river:

In Rhineland-Palatinate, the Ruwer near Trier burst its banks after a storm. Numerous cellars were full. At times, up to 300 emergency services were there to secure the houses with sandbags or to pump out cellars. In the meantime, the floods have declined again, said a spokeswoman for the technical operations management of the Trier-Saarburg district. "But the weather is very unstable and new thunderstorm cells are approaching from Saarland and France."

Heat now in the north - and further severe weather potential

Individual thunderstorms are also forecast in the coming days, which, according to the German Weather Service (DWD), can sometimes be very violent and degenerate into storms with heavy rain. First of all, the sun will mostly shine all over Germany in the coming days, temperatures in many places will continue to rise above 30 degrees.

On Friday it should stay friendly and sunny north-east of the Elbe, in the rest of the country new showers and thunderstorms form during the day, which, according to the DWD, also have potential for severe weather again. This time especially the northern half of Germany is characterized by temperatures of up to 34 degrees, in the rest of the country the thermometer should "only" show up to 30 degrees. According to the DWD, the heat situation eased somewhat on Saturday. The temperatures then rise to 25 to 30 degrees, the warmest in the east.
