Contrary to what it had initially indicated, the Paris police headquarters said on Wednesday in a press release that “only pedestrians” were concerned by the wearing of the compulsory mask, introduced since Monday in Paris and in four departments Ile-de-France.
Cyclists, people on scooters, or even motorists are not affected by this obligation because "they do not run the risk of contact in the lanes in which they circulate", explained the police headquarters.
Only pedestrians should wear the mask, "including if they play sports, and will therefore be subject to control measures", warned the prefecture.
Since Monday morning, wearing a mask is compulsory for people over 11 years old in the busiest areas of the capital as well as Hauts-de-Seine, Seine-Saint-Denis, Val-de-Marne and Val d'Oise.
The government is raising its tone
Tuesday, Prime Minister Jean Castex hardened his tone in the face of an "epidemiological situation (which) is evolving in the wrong direction". He now advocates the extension of the wearing of masks outside and the ban on gatherings of more than 5,000 people until October 30.
As such, the Paris Police Prefecture announced in the press release that it was working "in conjunction with the city of Paris" to "extend the areas concerned by the wearing of the compulsory mask" in the capital, following the announcements by the Prime Minister.
