Instagram hit: Retired model and current grandmother has created funny barbies that fit the spirit of the time • Watch | Fashion

A particularly cool grandmother and a retired model who maintains an Instagram account with tens of thousands of followers has created funny interest rates that fit the spirit of the period

Tonya Ruiz is a former successful model and a particularly cool grandmother in the present who designs unique Barbie dolls and maintains an Instagram account with tens of thousands of followers. When the corona began and the whole world went into quarantine, Ruiz decided to enlist Barbie to fight the virus and began designing dolls in the spirit of the time. The result? A hysterical hit.

To this day the most Slavic grandmother you have ever encountered was probably the grandmother of Little Red Riding Hood, but we all know that in her case things got a little complicated. Thanks to the American Tonya Ruiz, there is a new star in the senior category today and she is both cool and inspiring.

Ruiz, 57, was a successful model in her youth, and as such she was constantly exposed to the impossible beauty model in the industry, and to the rigid body image that is presented as ideal and exerts enormous pressure on women (and men) and often leads to devastating results.

After her career began to lead her to dark places that included wild celebrations, alcohol and relentless pressure to lose weight, Ruiz realized she wanted to be the sane voice, the one that encourages positive body image and acceptance and she retired from the industry and became a sought after and successful spokesperson in the field.

"As a child, my sister and I spent thousands of hours playing Barbies," she said in an interview, adding that she thinks Barbies was part of her decision to become a model, not least because of the physical resemblance between them (blue eyes, blond hair and long legs).

After experiencing the dangerous side of the industry, Ruiz says she realized how distorted this body image is and how unrealistic Barbie is actually. "I did not want Barbies at home when I was raising children, and I spoke publicly against them," she said, adding that she often used Barbie dolls in lectures she gave to demonstrate what an unrealistic body image is.

When she retired, she stored the many Barbie dolls she had collected since her childhood in the attic and left them there until her granddaughters found them and asked to play with them.

Ruiz says she did not want her granddaughters to grow up with Barbie's impossible body image as she experienced it as a child, so she decided to take them to the store in search of a line released by Metal (the Barbie doll maker) that was supposed to present them more realistically.

After finding the dolls they wanted, she added accessories to them, changed their look, and uploaded them online mostly as a joke. But to Ruiz's surprise, what was nothing more than a way to hang out with the granddaughters soon picked up speed, and became a success with an Instagram account called grandmagetsreal that currently has more than 76,000 followers.

Barbie enlists in the fight in Corona

As the corona plague began to spread and many citizens found themselves tucked away in homes in prolonged closures, Ruiz decided to upgrade its barbie line and began producing a barley line entirely in the spirit of closure.

Although Ruiz does not produce the dolls themselves, everything else is the fruit of her mind and hands. She buys the Barbies in stores and each time designs them with the help of accessories she buys in thrift stores and fairs.

Each Barbie has its own unique story and among the dolls you can find Barbie Bing, Barbie a vital worker, Barbie baking bread, zooming with a nest and many other funny and amusing designs.

The bad news is that despite hundreds of requests that Ruiz has received for marketing Barbies' line and selling it, she currently insists the design was done as a comedic break on her part during this not-so-difficult period and currently has no intentions of commercializing it.
