The case went through US media: Two hairdressers with Covid-19 had worked for days - and had not infected anyone. There is a banal reason for this.

  • Covid-19 lung disease is primarily transmitted through droplet infection. In the process, droplets of saliva contaminated with viruses get on the mucous membranes and penetrate the body *.
  • But contact with infected people does not always mean that you have contracted the coronavirus.
  • A case in the USA puzzled the responsible authorities for some time: two hairdressers continued to work despite a Covid 19 infection and still not infected anyone. However, the explanation for this is banal.

The hairdressing chain Great Clips had already made headlines in May 2020, which caused concerned citizens. Despite a coronavirus infection - which they classified as a cold - two employees continued to work for days and cut 139 people's hair during this time. Against the background that coronaviruses spread primarily through the inhalation of contaminated air from patients, a disturbing scenario.

The health department of Springfield-Greene County, where the said hair salon is located, was alerted and expected a wave of infections on site. But that turned out to be a fallacy: none of the customers had contracted the two women with corona - and that has a simple reason.

Two hairdressers keep cutting hair - and none of them is infected with Covid-19

In Springfield, Missouri, few coronavirus infections had been reported by mid-May, which is why the two hairdressers mistakenly classified their symptoms as signs of a common cold. Therefore, they continued to work for a week after the first signs of illness - and during this time they cut 139 customers' hair . But after a week it was clear: It was not a flu-like infection. A visit to the doctor clarified: the two hairdressers were infected with the corona virus and were immediately quarantined. Customers were also identified, quarantined and monitored. But none of the customers were infected - thanks to simple masks made of fabric.

Everyone - the two hairdressers and their customers - wore face masks during the service, as ordered by the City of Springfield. The case of the two hairdressers was investigated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and even published as a study. In it, the study leaders come to the conclusion that even the simplest masks made of fabric can have a protective effect , as the mirror reported. The researchers conclude: "The consistent implementation of guidelines on face covering could reduce the spread of infections in the general population". Other publications also indicate that face masks are effective in preventing coronavirus infections.
