There he sits in front of a picture with green trees in his apartment near Jerusalem, a little pale, and speaks in a soft voice about the catastrophic explosion that rocked Beirut a few days earlier. The Israeli writer David Grossman, 66, talks about the possibilities of peace and rapprochement between the warring countries that could result from this disaster: "You know, in my naive way I want to believe that it is the beginning of a better relationship between Israel and Lebanon. "
He mentions the offers of help from Israel, the City Hall in Tel Aviv, which shone in the colors of the flag of Lebanon. David Grossman is an optimist of quiet, monstrous strength. His son Uri died while serving in Lebanon, just hours before a ceasefire that Grossman had called for in a public appeal. Grossman himself points out: "It is not easy for me to talk about it, but this week it has been 14 years since he fell in Lebanon. The Lebanese should really be my enemies. But they are not."
