Shower gel can be found in every bathroom - but there are considerable differences in quality. If you use the following products, you are on the safe side.

  • Do you like to use natural cosmetics *? Keep it up: At Ökotest, all tested natural cosmetics brands do very well.
  • Of 50 shower gels and shower creams tested, ten products did not convince in the test.
  • A popular brand is one of the not recommended shower gels. A questionable preservative was detected in the product.

Shower off the sunscreen in the evening or take a refreshing dip after exercising: Many people use shower gel every day, which comes in many different designs. Mango-vanilla scent, sparkling pink shower foam and appealing bottles: In drugstores and pharmacies, consumers are spoiled for choice as to which product to buy. First and foremost, the product should be kind to the skin , but more and more people are also placing great value on environmental compatibility.

The consumer magazine Ökotest has tested 50 refreshing shower gels and shower creams for these aspects. These include well-known brands such as Nivea, Dusch das and Fa and also own brands from supermarkets, discounters and drug stores . In the laboratory, the products were checked for allergy-causing fragrances, questionable formaldehyde / formaldehyde releasers and other questionable substances, among other things. Plastics that pollute the water were also included in the overall assessment.

Shower gel at Ökotest: "The result is pleasing"

"The result is gratifying: we give 16 top marks, 24 others are" good ". That means: We can recommend 80 percent of the shower gels tested with a clear conscience or at least with small restrictions," says the Ökotest publication. Natural cosmetics in particular are convincing : All 16 products tested scored very well, including:

  • Alverde care shower organic mint organic bergamot from dm
  • Dresdner Essenz care shower Every day is an adventure! by Li-iL

The bottom of the test with a grade of 6: Dove Rich Care Shower

However, there are also manufacturers who use questionable fragrances and skin-irritating preservatives. Five products failed the eco-test because of critical ingredients, including the Dove Rich Care Shower by Unilever. The loser in the test with the overall rating "Unsatisfactory" contains formaldehyde / formaldehyde releasing agents as a preservative, which even in small amounts irritates the mucous membranes and can trigger allergies. "With the start of production in June 2020, the product will soon be available on the market without formaldehyde / formaldehyde releasers and organohalogen compounds," says a comment on Ökotest.

Other products that have been given an overall rating of " poor " due to ingredients that are harmful to the skin and the environment :

  • Bebe Soft Shower Cream
  • Original Source Tingly Mint & Tea Tree Shower
  • Palmolive Naturals Sensitive shower cream with milk proteins
  • Vandini Nutri shower care peony blossom & argan oil

Avoid plastic for the sake of the environment - solid shower gel also available

A thorn in the side of Ökotest as an environmental problem is the use of plastics in shower gels. "In cosmetics, they are not only found in solid form as microplastics, but very often also in gel-like or liquid consistency. Soluble synthetic polymers are problematic for the environment because they are more or less difficult to break down, depending on the compound. Even if sewage treatment plants one Filter most of the wastewater: they often end up in the fields via the sewage sludge - and possibly at some point on our plates, "says Ökotest. Also harmful to the environment: the plastic waste that is generated by shower gel filled in plastic bottles. Solid shower gels that look like a bar of soap and are used that way are a good alternative .
