When a bat gets lost in the apartment, it is usually exciting - for animals and humans alike. But what is the best way to react?

Berlin (dpa / tmn) - Suddenly it flutters in the room: A bat in the living room or bedroom is no reason to panic. On the contrary: Keeping calm is now the top priority. The animal often got lost, explains Imke Wardenburg from Nabu Berlin.

If the animal flies into the room at night or at dusk, Wardenburg advises: Open the window wide, turn off the light and wait. Most of the time the animals find their way out on their own.

First in the box during the day

If you find a bat indoors during the day, you should collect it carefully. The expert advises you to wear thick gloves or use a thick towel. Bats don't attack humans. If the animals panic or are stressed, they can try to fight back and bite.

Now put the animal in a box with small air holes - and close it tightly. Do not bring the bat outside until late at dusk. It is best to put the animal next to a tree or a wall.

Looking for summer quarters

Stray bats are often juveniles that fledge from early August to mid-September. The animals are looking for summer quarters and mistake the tilted windows for it. You fly into the room and then can't find the exit.

By the way: bats are not allowed to be injured or even killed - they are protected by law and, according to Nabu, are among the most threatened mammals in Germany.
