If you can't go on professionally, just change the industry? That can be a good idea. In the application you have to know how to sell yourself properly.

Bochum (dpa / tmn) - A change of industry can maneuver employees out of a professional dead end. The start in the new field will only succeed if applicants can convince future employers.

Applicants have to make it clear that the change is not a stopgap solution because they cannot find another job in their industry, explains Ben Dehn from the application service "The Applicants" in Bochum. It is helpful when applicants express why they want to move into a new industry - not why they want to leave the previous one.

Clearly express the goals of the change

According to the expert, it is important to clearly state the goals that you want to achieve with the change in industry. Is it about gaining completely new experiences? Or do you want to develop professionally? You may be looking for a new challenge. Applicants can also declare that they would like to work more in an international context.

Dehn also recommends looking for one or two aspects in the industry of your choice that you can identify with. For example, the company philosophy or history come into question, but also the company culture or the composition of a team. This also underlines the motivation for an application.

Put a lack of experience into perspective

According to the expert, it is also crucial not to "make yourself too small as an applicant from outside the industry." Rather, it is important to find one's own professional and personal qualifications that are already relevant for the current industry. Then applicants have to explain how and why they can also bring these skills to bear in the new position.

Dehn explains this with an example: If a hotel employee plans to switch to sales, he can, for example, demonstrate his skills in dealing with guests and service providers on a daily basis. These are also relevant for sales work. This even makes up for a lack of industry experience.

The industry change motivational boost

Basically: A change of industry can be a good way to develop professionally. Employees can learn so many new things and find out more about their own strengths. That and the associated change of perspective may even bring a whole new boost of motivation for professional life in the end.

Of course, a change of industry is also an option if the economic situation makes it necessary. For example, because some industries are currently still suffering heavily due to corona.
