Doctors have a lot of responsibility for their patients, after all, every mistake can have dire consequences. But how much money do senior physicians, interns and co. Earn for it?

Doctors are certainly among the better-paid people in Germany. But the road to get there is long and requires a lot of discipline. For example, those who do not have a top school leaving certificate - the required Numerus Clausus (NC) is currently 1.0 to 1.1 - often waits several years for a study place. And the six-year medical degree is no walk in the park either.

Doctor's salary depends on position and type of employment

How much doctors earn depends on many factors. First of all, you have to distinguish where a doctor works, for example at a university clinic, in a private or municipal hospital or as a resident doctor in a practice.

How much do doctors earn in the hospital?

Most clinic doctors are paid according to the tariff , which in turn depends on the professional experience or position of the doctor and his specialist area .

This is how much hospital doctors earn on average:

Job

Average annual salary (gross)

chief doctor

279,000 euros

Senior physician

114,000 euros

Specialist

84,000 euros

Assistant doctor

(Doctor in training)

68,000 euros

The collective agreements differ depending on the type of institution. This is how doctors become

  • paid at university clinics according to "TV Doctors TdL",
  • in municipal hospitals according to "TV Doctors VKA" and "TV Doctors VKA others",
  • in private hospitals they each have their own collective agreements.

Doctors at university hospitals usually get a better salary than their colleagues in municipal hospitals. Depending on the facility, private clinics are either in between or pay less than municipal providers.

  • For example, an assistant doctor in remuneration group Ä1 earns around 4,585 euros a month in the first year at the university clinic , while his colleague in the municipal hospital earns around 4,402 euros gross in the same remuneration group and level.
  • A senior physician  in remuneration group Ä3 receives around EUR 7,580 gross per month in the first year at the university clinic , his colleague of the same rank in the municipal hospital receives around EUR 7,278 gross.

How much do practice doctors earn?

The income and expenses of general practitioners differ greatly from one another in the same specialist area , as various factors play a role here, such as the size of the practice, conservative or surgical treatment, region or even working hours.

The average net income per practice owner in 2011 was an average of 166,000 euros gross , as determined by the Federal Statistical Office. Net income means that the sum of expenses (e.g. for material and personnel costs) is deducted from the income. Under no circumstances should this be equated with the income or business profit of a resident doctor, because the practice owners have to pay for a number of other things from the net income, such as the costs of expensive practice takeovers or private expenses such as old-age provision or health insurance.

If you look at the field, radiologists earn the best in Germany : They can look forward to monthly net income of 25,300 euros per month. But actually there is usually much less of it in the wallet if, for example, costs for equipment etc. are due.
