Making money with curiosities and antiques: The principle behind the ZDF program “Bares for Rares”. On August 20, there was a special salt bowl auction.

  • The ZDF format “Bares for Rares” surprises viewers again and again: utensils that remind the layman of worthless junk at first glance are sometimes auctioned for huge sums.
  • Rare wristwatches *, special jewelry or antique furniture quickly attract the full attention of “Bares for Rares” dealers.
  • And salespeople can also make good money with old ceramics and generally dishes from bygone times - like a radio presenter from Bavaria recently .

On August 20, the time had come for Christopher Mayer from Gilching in Bavaria: a set of English silver cups earned him the dealer's card - and more money than he had expected .

The 28-year-old had estimated that the service could be worth around 100 euros. But the expert estimate showed a completely different value: The set was estimated at 300 euros - also because of its perfect condition and an original box in which the silver, small cups can be stored . The rarity is a Salièren set: English tea cups made of silver that were used as salt vessels for the table at the beginning of the 20th century. Distributed on the table, all guests could quickly get the coveted spice.

Salt vessels from the 20th century: sold for a whole 470 euros instead of 300 euros

Christopher Mayer, radio presenter from Gilching, had received the rarity from his godfather at the christening and until recently had no idea that he even owned it. His mother found it in the basement while moving and gave it to him. Since the young man cannot do anything with the dishes with his own radio show, he used “Bares for Rares” to sell them on. The traders were delighted with the treasure from the 20th century - and outbid each other. In the end, Mayer went home with his pockets full: he got a whopping 470 euros for the Salièren set, as can be seen in the video from the ZDF media library.
