Water in the test: Several popular brands fail the Öko-Test. One of the mineral waters from Apollinaris is one of them.

Water in the test: Several popular brands fail the Öko-Test. One of the mineral waters from Apollinaris is one of them.

  • Water in the test: Öko-Test * examined 100 different mineral water products.
  • Gerolsteiner and many others were able to convince in the test
  • However, some brands like Apollinaris fail the test.

Update from Monday, June 15, 2020, 8:42 p.m.: Öko-Test has tested various mineral waters and complained about some. Among other things, because of an increased boron content . One of the companies tested is resisting this.

The  Brohler mineral and medicinal Brunnen GmbH based in Brohl-Lützing in the district Ahrweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate. "In the mineral water test of the Öko-Test magazine, our Brohler mineral water was wrongly rated as poor," said Brohler in a statement.

Test of water: Brohler mineral water rejects the results of the Öko-Test

The company also announced that the poor quality assessment was mainly caused by the discovery of a sweetener and an increased boron content.

Brohler rejects both allegations and therefore had water from the same batch checked by two independent institutes, which do not confirm the test results from Öko-Test

Test of water: Has Öko-Test set the limit value for boron arbitrarily?

In addition, the company accuses Öko-Test that the limit value for boron in the water was set arbitrarily. "The legal limit value for boron is 5.5 mg / l for mineral water and 1 mg / l for drinking water. Ökotest has arbitrarily reduced this limit value to 0.5 mg / l."

According to Brohler, the limit value of the water is not only below the statutory limit value, but also below the value set by Öko-Test . The sweetener content would also be well below the legal limit. "We also informed Öko-Test about this and presented the corresponding test results from Romeis and SGS Fresenius. Nevertheless, the test verdict was made on the basis of the analyzes that we thought differed."

Water in the test: Öko-Test takes a close look at various mineral waters

First report from Thursday, June 11th, 2020, 1:44 p.m.: Kassel - In Germany there are over 800 recognized mineral springs. Consumers can choose from more than 500 types of mineral water and therefore expect high quality. The consumer magazine Öko-Test has tested 100 "medium" water in its annual test . The majority of the mineral waters tested are convincing.

However, some brands also fail in the test . Two types of water in particular have a high uranium, nitrite and boron content. In some sources, pesticide breakdown products have also penetrated.

Water in the test: Öko-Test takes stock

Around half of the products in the Öko-Test were given the top rating of “very good”, and another 14 were “good”. A total of 18 sources are affected by contamination. Four other waters fail with “insufficient” or “insufficient”.

Öko-Test: Water in the test - Apollinaris Medium fails

These are the losers at Öko-Test :

  • Anhaltin mountain spring medium with "insufficient"
  • Brohler medium with "insufficient"
  • Source Medium Nature Park with "poor"
  • Apollinaris Medium with "insufficient"

Water in the test: There are minus points according to the Öko-Test

35 of the 100 waters performed worse than “good” in the test . According to Öko-Test criteria, there are negative points for:

  • contained breakdown products of pesticides
  • artificial sweeteners
  • Uranium and boron
  • nitrate
  • packaging

Pesticide breakdown products do not pose a risk, but they reduce the original purity of the water. These degradation products could be detected in 15 varieties.

Water under test: Öko-Test examines mineral water

Uranium and boron, on the other hand, are not harmless to humans. Even though they occur naturally in layers of soil and rock, uranium can even damage the kidneys and lungs. The eco-test results in increased values in the water of “Naturpark Quelle Medium” and “Apollinaris Medium”.

Artificial sweeteners were contained in five varieties. These already migrated through the body and the sewage treatment plant. On the other hand, they can also come from inadequately cleaned bottles.

Water in the test: Öko-Test finds increased nitrate levels

In the Öko-Test it becomes clear that most of the nitrate values in the water are still below the limit, but these can be particularly dangerous for babies in the first few months of life. The substance itself is harmless, but it can be converted into nitrite in the body and promote the formation of problematic nitrosamines.

These are carcinogenic in animal experiments. The "Bad Kissinger Medium", "Alwa Medium" and "Bad Pyrmonter Medium" mineral waters are particularly noticeable due to their increased nitrate value.

Water in the test: packaging relevant to Öko-Test

The packaging of the water is also relevant for the evaluation of Öko-Test . In the test, some bottles were not labeled as whether they were reusable or single-use plastic.

The bottles from Oppacher, Lidl, Rossmann, Kaufland as well as “Anhaltiner Bergquelle Medium”, “Sawell Medium” and “Bad Kissinger Medium” contain 50 percent or more of recycled PET , according to Öko-Test .
