The measure obviously concerns pedestrians but also "users of bicycles, two-wheelers, scooters and other mobility devices.

The compulsory wearing of the mask will be extended to the entire capital and to the departments of the inner suburbs from Friday at 8 a.m. A decree taken in the afternoon requires it "in all of Paris" from "tomorrow morning at 8 am", announced this Thursday on BFM-TV Anne Souyris, the assistant to the mayor of Paris in charge of health.

The elected Parisian hinted that there could occasionally be a period of tolerance in the early days. “It will take a few days (to get into the habit)”, she said, adding that “initially verbalization is not relevant”.

But for its part, the prefecture underlined in its press release that the state services would be "mobilized to ensure that this obligation is respected", liable to a fine of 135 euros in the event of a contravention.

Prime Minister Jean Castex announced Thursday morning an imminent generalization of the wearing of a mask in Paris, following an upsurge of the coronavirus in the capital, but without giving a more precise date.

On foot, by bike or by scooter

This measure will also apply to all "of the three departments of the inner suburbs: Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine and Val-de-Marne", indicates the press release from the police headquarters.

"Wearing a mask will be compulsory for all pedestrians circulating in public spaces, users of bicycles, two-wheelers, scooters and other personal mobility devices, motorized or not," it is specified.

Only "users traveling inside motor vehicles (private cars, vans or professional heavy goods vehicles) will be exempt from this obligation".

The moment "when families come home"

“At a time when Paris is filling up” since “families are returning”, “it makes sense to take on new habits,” said the deputy mayor of Paris.

On August 8, the police headquarters announced the obligation to wear a mask in many busy streets of the capital. A week later, a new map was published with, this time, entire areas instead of streets, to facilitate compliance with the measure.

This decision also comes after that of Marseille which made the wearing of the mask compulsory the day before. The city has also decreed the closure of bars and restaurants from 11 p.m. throughout the Bouches-du-Rhône department. The government is not ruling out this measure for the capital.
