A German discount chain is venturing into new territory: the customer should shop faster, more efficiently and without contact - the “Scan & Go” revolution is now coming to Bavaria.

  • Fast, flexible and efficient - this is how retail customers should be able to shop in the future .
  • The German supermarket chain Netto Marken-Discount * is now revolutionizing shopping.
  • The " Scan & Go " - App at the "fast" Checkout can customers in Bayern now test.

Munich - The German supermarket chain Netto Marken-Discount wants to offer its customers a completely new shopping experience in the future. Netto is therefore now revolutionizing shopping at the checkout - customers on the assembly line should soon be faster and more efficient. As the first major retailer , the company is now rolling out its self-scanning innovation at several locations in Bavaria . An innovation that is likely to have had a major impact on the hygiene measures in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic .

More and more customers now expect to be able to make cashless and contactless payments in the supermarket using smartphones or smartwatches - Netto is now trying to meet this customer request with its "Scan & Go" app . The consumer portal Chip.de has now tested the "fast" checkout in Munich , with which Netto wants to jump on the digitization train.

Netto Marken-Discount: How does shopping by smartphone work?

In order to be able to use the services of the discount giant , Netto customers have to consider three things: They need a smartphone or a smartwatch and the Netto app “Scan & Go” has to be installed on it. In addition, caution is advised: the local Netto branch has to offer the new service after all. The "fast" checkout is not yet available in every German Netto branch - only in ten branches, including some in Munich , Erlangen and Nuremberg - the new service is currently being tested. If the self-scanning process is well received, more will follow.

The first self-service checkouts were recently installed at Netto in Munich - now payment via app is linked to these checkouts. According to Chip.de , the concept is "self-explanatory", because Netto has placed the focus on simple operation, so that shopping can be carried out more quickly overall. Upon entering the branch, the customer opens the app and is notified that the self-scanning method is available here. A barcode symbol is then displayed next to the Netto logo , which the customer must select. His shopping can start now.

The customer either scans the product packs or the price tags on the shelf with their cell phone . The Netto-App determines the product and the price automatically - the customer has to put the product of his choice not only in the real, but also in the virtual shopping cart at the same time . But what happens with loose goods , such as those from the fruit and vegetable shelf? According to the testers from Chip.de , Netto has an additional scale for this purpose. The customer simply scans the weight display with their smartphone and the app calculates the price.

Munich, Nuremberg, Erlangen: How do you pay at the "fast" checkout?

Once the customer has ticked off everything on their supply list, they click on the "Complete purchase" button in the app . The virtual shopping cartis now displayed as a QR code . The QR code only needs to be scanned at the self-service terminal. The customer can select his preferred payment option on the screen: The net app , bank cards, net voucher cards or bonus points from the DeutschlandCard are available.

When paying via the app , the customer either uses "PayPal" or "by bank transfer" - this is quick and easy, the data is already stored in the customer account in the app. According to Chip.de , Netto would like to offer Apple Pay and Google Pay soon . Purchases at Netto can of course still be paid for at the conventional checkout - for this, the customer has to name the four digits that are located under his QR code in the app .

Aldi and Lidl have one thing in common: With a simple trick, they exploit the shopping behavior of consumers during the corona crisis. (cos) * Merkur.de is part of the Ippen-Digital network.
