The consumption of coffee and cigarettes during pregnancy is an issue that has caused concern in the scientific community for several years in which dozens of investigations have been done to discover how it affects the health of babies and mothers.
And now, a recent publication analyzed the work of specialists in the last two decades, and warned that there is no "safe" amount of coffee consumption that does not cause harm to fetuses, so it recommends pregnant women to avoid it as All coast.
The article, published in the British Medical Journal by Dr Jackes James , notes that, "No fewer than 14 meta-analyzes published in the last two decades unanimously report a significantly increased risk of caffeine-related harm."
Something important is that the doctor highlights not only the intake of coffee, but also other products that could contain this asset, such as teas, sodas, diet or energy drinks.
James warns that the most known and proven effects that caffeine causes in pregnancies are: abortions, low birth weight, children with leukemia, childhood obesity and stillbirth.
The researcher added that, until now, medical guidelines in different countries indicated that a consumption of less than 200 mg of caffeine per day, or the equivalent of two cups of coffee, was safe in pregnant women.
However, after a thorough review, he believes that some modifications to the recommendations are necessary to prevent risks.
On the other hand, the doctorChristopher Zahn , vice president of practical activities for the American College of Gynecologists and Obstetricians, told CNN that they uphold the claim that this moderate use "appears to be a major contributing factor to miscarriage or premature labor."
But other research published in the journal Human Reproduction found that there is a relationship between miscarriages and stillbirths and caffeine, but not only during pregnancy but also in the months before.
In this case, 11,088 women between the ages of 20 and 29 were analyzed to ask about their regular consumption of caffeinated beverages before and during pregnancy. The specialists noted that those who had the highest rates of this problem were those who drank more than eight cups a day, prior to fertilization.
They also pointed out that something they detected is that those women who drank coffee frequently were also the most likely to smoke. And, during the first trimester of pregnancy, tobacco was what generated more complications in the health of babies.
In addition to this, another analysis published in Food and Chemical Toxicology found that in several of the studies analyzed this relationship is usually found between tobacco and caffeine, which can cause a gap since "it reflects a tendency for women not to report the socially undesirable behaviors (such as smoking), and declaring [only] those that are neutral, such as drinking coffee ”.
That is why some scientists argue that caffeine is not so harmful in pregnancy, while others point out that it should be left out as a precaution.
