(ANSA) - BRASILIA, 29 AUG - Basile's close on the interruptions of pregnancy in case of rape. The Ministry of Health has issued new restrictions on abortion, including the obligation of medical staff to offer the woman the possibility of seeing the embryo or fetus through ultrasound. The woman who chooses to have an abortion will also have to "detail" what happened and will be warned that she risks legal action if she cannot prove that she was raped. Furthermore, the rape will need to be reported to the police whether the woman wants it or not.
Brazil, led by the far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, and where the Catholic and evangelical conservative Churches are particularly powerful, allows abortion only in the event of rape, or danger to the life of the woman or serious congenital problems of the fetus. Yet even these exceptions are poorly accepted by the religious right.
The new restrictions were enacted after protests over the case of a 10-year-old girl allegedly raped by her uncle, who was denied the possibility of an abortion by the authorities of her native state, EspiritoSanto. In the end, the little girl flew to Recife where she was subjected to an intervention while a violent far-right demonstration was taking place outside the hospital. (HANDLE).
