Campaign on the Importance of Early Detection of Colon Cancer (Prevention Order)

The world shed a tear last Friday when the news of the death of actor Chadwick Bosman, who played the superhero "The Black Panther" in Marvel movies, came out. The esteemed actor died of colon cancer at the age of 43 after battling the disease for about four years.

The shock of his death was received not only due to the fact that the actor hid his illness for years, but also because of his young age. But the truth is that according to data from around the world, his young age should not surprise anyone, as the number of cases of colon cancer among people under 50 has increased since the 1990s, and half of all new diagnoses are among people under 66, according to a report by The American Cancer Society published last March.

Colon cancer is the second most common cancer in women and men in Israel, and unfortunately it is one of the deadliest. Every year, 1,400 people die from colon cancer in Israel, and 3,000 people are diagnosed with it. The first symptoms of the disease are usually loss of appetite, blood in the stool and severe abdominal pain.

Despite the new data, as in the rest of the world, invasive colorectal cancer in Israel is more common in older people, starting at 60. Nevertheless, the American Cancer Society recommends regular screening for colorectal cancer from the age of 45. Other health organizations, including in Israel, still recommend routine tests from the age of 50. "Much of the decline in incidence in adults is due to increased testing, but the reason The age of the young women is still unknown, "said the report's editors.

The report further states that "the obesity epidemic is probably contributing to the increase in cases, but it seems to be not the only cause." According to the report's editors, nutrition has a major impact on colon cancer risk and there are many studies that describe how various things we consume, including medications like antibiotics, affect gut health, and especially their role in determining the microorganisms that make up our microbiome.

Early detection saves lives

The chances of recovery from colon cancer and the time it takes largely depend on the time of discovery. Early detection of the disease leads to extremely high recovery rates ranging from 90 to 100 percent. The earlier the discovery is made, the simpler the therapeutic procedure, and does not require complicated surgeries and long-term treatments.

The main risk factors for the disease are age, family history of the disease, previous benign tumor in the intestine, inflammatory bowel disease, genetic mutations as well as effects of unhealthy lifestyle, obesity, excessive sitting, high fat and low fiber diet, smoking and alcohol consumption.

In 2005, a national program for the detection of colorectal cancer began at the Ministry of Health, which increased the number of subjects and contributed to early detection. The program includes a faecal occult blood test from age 50 to age 74 once a year, and routine colonoscopy tests for those at increased risk for the disease.
