Bavaria brings particularly strict hygiene rules into play in schools: Depending on infections, the mask requirement for primary school students is to be tightened - and hybrid lessons are to be arranged.

With the number of corona cases rising sharply in Bavaria, elementary school students should also wear mouth and nose protection in the classroom.

If the limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week is exceeded in a region, "there would be a mask requirement in face-to-face classes for everyone, including primary school children," said Minister of Education Michael Piazolo (Free Voters) after a meeting of the Bavarian state government in Munich.

In order to minimize the risk of infection, from this value onwards the classes should switch back to a change between classroom teaching and learning at home.

Most federal states had relied on this so-called hybrid model before the summer holidays.

The Council of Ministers in Bavaria had previously decided that after the school holidays on the first nine school days, all teachers and students in secondary schools must wear a mask in class.

In addition, a mask requirement applies to schools in the Free State in the buildings and everywhere where the minimum distance cannot be observed.

If there are 35 new infections and more per 100,000 inhabitants after the nine days, a mask requirement should be reintroduced in class at all secondary schools, as Piazolo said, unless the schools concerned are able to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters due to the premises ensure between the students.

North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) had previously relaxed its rules.

Education Minister Yvonne Gebauer (FDP) announced on Monday that the nationwide mask requirement in classes at all secondary schools would be lifted.

Since Tuesday, the schools should decide for themselves.

Up until then, NRW had the strictest school rules for wearing mouth and nose protection.

In most federal states, this is only compulsory in corridors and corridors or in the school yard, but not in the classroom.
