Drinks mixed with protein powder promise optimal muscle building.

But you should stay away from the following protein shakes: They contain harmful substances.

• Some men - and women too - drink them daily: protein shakes that are supposed to help build muscle quickly. 

• But the drinks are not only popular with athletes: Many people who want to lose weight also use the shakes *, as they fill you up for a long time and thereby reduce the feeling of hunger. 

• What often doesn't seem really appetizing often has a lot to offer in terms of taste.

  The protein shakes are available in a wide variety of flavors such as strawberry, chocolate or vanilla.

The Stiftung Warentest as a state-sponsored consumer organization examined well-known brands that sell protein shakes -

. 

Grade four and five: The following protein shakes contain harmful substances

21 products declared especially for athletes have been tested by Stiftung Warentest.

The focus was mainly on the protein quality, the truthfulness of the advertising promise and the pollution.

"We examined the powder for mineral oil components (Mosh and Moah), free 3-MCPD, chlorate and perchlorate, lead, cadmium, nickel, mercury, arsenic and aluminum", it says in the publication of Stiftung Warenestest.

• "Protein 90 Neutral" from Rossmann Wellmix Sport

• "Sports hero protein powder, vegan Bio9" from Bio Planète

• "Sport Premium Protein 78 Pure, vegan Bio3" from Raab Vitalfood

• "Vegan High Protein Shake Vanilla, vegan organic" by Pur Ya!

Two of the detected pollutants, nickel and aluminum, could have been absorbed by the plants from the soil, according to the statement of those responsible.

Most of the other protein shakes tested received the rating "overall okay", although some products in the "declaration" category were extremely weak

Here, pictures of vanilla pods or flowers were often used to give the impression that the drink contained components of real vanilla - although the analysis showed that the powder did not contain any significant amounts of the spice.

Stiftung Warentest punished this consumer deception with a poor rating in the "Declaration" category.

• "Premium Grade Designer Whey Protein, Vanilla Flavor" from ESN

With these - as with most other products -

: "Recreational athletes * already consume significantly more protein with normal food than they need . And even competitive athletes can normally easily meet their increased needs with it. Protein powders are only suitable for a few athletes - for example, if they cannot eat a balanced diet for several days or have to pay attention to a low competition weight like ski jumpers and gymnasts ".
