Violent riots broke out in Leipzig in the evening for the third time in a row.

In the Connewitz district, a demonstration against gentrification and displacement is said to have gotten out of hand after just a few hundred meters.

After stones were thrown at the windows of new buildings, the police opened the elevator, as a reporter from the dpa news agency reported.

Then there were hunting scenes between masked people and the investigators.

Several people are said to have been taken into custody.

Tram traffic in the southern part of the city was stopped.

According to the first police estimates, around 500 people had gathered for the registered demo under the motto "Combining struggles - For a solidarity-based neighbors".

Despite the ban, the participants set firecrackers and Bengalos on fire.

The Saxony police wrote on Twitter that stones and pyrotechnics had been thrown at officials.

The meeting is officially over.

"Please stay peaceful!" The police appealed to the demonstrators.

There had already been outbreaks of violence in Leipzig on Thursday and Friday evening.

This was preceded by squatting that had been ended by the police.

The police were attacked from unannounced demonstrations.

Leipzig's police chief Torsten Schultze said the attackers were "obvious left-wing extremists".

A total of nine officers were slightly injured.

Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung also condemned the riots.

"You can't create living space by attacking police officers and setting fire to barricades," said the SPD politician.

For some time now, a battle has been raging in Leipzig over dwindling living space.

Current triggers are houses like the one at Ludwigstrasse 71, which was occupied in August after 20 years of vacancy and was vacated by the police on September 2nd.

The left-wing scene in Leipzig has been fighting against gentrification for years.

Again and again there are violent riots, attacks on the press and street battles.

The smoldering conflict was already spiraling out of control at the beginning of the year.
