The Covid-19 pandemic is having a major impact on mental health: from March to today in Italy there have been 71 suicides and 46 attempted suicides, presumably related to Covid-19, compared to a number of suicides due to the economic crisis that in the same period of 2019 stood at 44 and that of suicide attempts at 42. This was reported by psychiatrists at the International Conference on issues related to suicide, organized by Sapienza University of Rome and with the unconditional support of the Menarini Foundation, on the occasion of the World Day for September 10 suicide prevention. In addition to the consequences of the financial crisis, social isolation weighs heavily, very different from the necessary physical distancing, the stigma towards those who have overcome the disease, the worsening of a psychological distress already exasperated by the pandemic.
