The brown bear was on the run for six weeks.
Now authorities in northern Italy have recaptured "M49".
The animal, known as the escape king, fell into a pipe trap in the Lagorai region in the Italian Alps, the province of Trento said.
The bear fled twice: the first time in July 2019. It was not until nine months later, in April 2020, that the bear was recaptured.
But shortly afterwards the bear disappeared again: in July of this year.
In the process, he bent metal rods and damaged the frame of a fence.
Its reputation as the escape king has given the bear the nickname "Papillon", after the hero of the prisoner novel of the same name by the French writer Henri Charrière.
In Trentino, the predators were reintroduced with a protection program.
They reproduced well, so that around 90 animals should now live there.
For some residents this is too much.
During its free time, the bear is said to have appeared near settlements.
Farmers complained that he had killed their animals.
Most recently, a bear attacked and injured a police officer in a mountain village at the end of August.
These incidents caused repeated debates between authorities, residents and animal rights activists.
