(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 14 - The Pantanal, the largest wetland in the world and one of the most important biomes in Brazil, continues to burn relentlessly: according to the National Institute of Scientific Research (Inpe), between 1 January and 12 September this year, the number of outbreaks in the region increased by 201% compared to the same period in 2019 (from 4,660 to 14,489).

The fire has so far destroyed 2.34 million hectares, or 15% of the entire area.

The most affected state is Mato Grosso, where the flames are also threatening reserves and natural parks.

Animal corpses, such as jaguars, alligators, deer and birds, are stativists on the edge of the Transpantaneira highway.

The progress of a fire in the indigenous land of TerezaCristina, in Santo Antonio de Leverger, also forced the evacuation from the place of 45 Indians of the Boe Bororo ethnic group.

To fight the fires, the federal government has meanwhile confirmed the sending of further reinforcements, which will be added to the soldiers of the Armed Forces already active in the area to help local firefighters.
