In the trial for the death of a two-and-a-half-month-old baby, the Oldenburg district court sentenced the accused 33-year-old to eight years' imprisonment.

According to the court spokeswoman, the chamber saw it as proven that the man shook little Bryan one morning in Wilhelmshaven in early March 2018 so violently that he died.

The 33-year-old was not the birth father of the baby, but had recognized paternity after the child was born.

At the time of the crime, the man was engaged to the child's mother.

While the woman was training as a mechatronics technician, the man who was on vacation was responsible for the baby.

Fever, paleness, gasping breathing

In court, the man denied shaking Bryan.

He has no explanation for the serious injuries to the baby.

At the beginning of March 2018, the mother had received a message from her fiancé during her working hours that the baby had a fever and a bruise on the face, was pale and was rattling.

She asked him to take the child to the doctor.

He sent the family to the hospital, where doctors found that the baby had brain damage.

Bryan was admitted to the intensive care unit and died about three weeks later.

In reaching its judgment, the Chamber relied on expert opinions.

Accordingly, the baby clearly died of a shaking trauma.

In their plea, the public prosecutor's office had demanded an eight-year prison sentence.

The co-plaintiff - the mother of the deceased child - joined this claim.

The defense demanded an acquittal.

The verdict is not yet legally binding.
