Aldi Süd is testing a new feature in shopping carts in some branches in southern Germany.
You can find out which customers could benefit from this and whether your branch is affected here.
A new type of shopping trolley has been tested in selected Aldi Süd branches for several months.
The innovation is aimed at a different target group than you might think.
Will the change soon take place across Germany?
Munich - Some customers just want to buy something for dinner quickly and don't need a basket or cart.
The others prefer to do the whole week's shopping at once and pile all the products in the shopping cart.
What has been missing in most supermarkets and discounters so far:
small shopping trolleys for children
.
Shopping cart innovation: Aldi Süd is not the first
The Aldi discount chain is known for introducing new products to its branches.
In April, for example, new shopping bags with longer handles were offered.
Now the children's shopping trolleys are being introduced in some Aldi Süd branches in Munich and they are being tested to see how they are received by customers.
But: Aldi Süd does not come up with this idea first.
The practical mini-formats are already known from
drugstores such as dm and Rossmann
.
With them, the children feel more involved when shopping and can push themselves.
In some countries there are even children's shopping cars with which the children can drive around the supermarket.
Most German supermarkets and discounters have not yet reached that point.
Aldi Süd: Mini shopping carts are not for children at all
But one fact is surprising: Aldi Süd is not planning to use it for its smallest customers.
As a test run in Italy showed, where the mini formats are already available, they are mainly used
by older people
.
Because they can often no longer carry heavy shopping baskets and they find it difficult to steer classic shopping carts through the aisles.
The small wagons have a flagpole with a handle attached.
Another advantage: You don't need any coins.
So customers who
do not have a shopping coin to hand
also like to use the little trolleys.
New shopping carts at Aldi Süd: just a test for now
As Chip reports, Aldi Süd's campaign is initially just a test.
Only a few so-called “branches of the future” in Munich are equipped with the additional small shopping carts.
At Chip's request, the Aldi Süd press office confirmed that selected branches in the new concept have been equipped with the small shopping carts since October 2019.
The test is currently running in 250 branches.
It is not known whether and when the new cars will be used across the board.
