Oktoberfest 2020. It looks like this on Munich's Theresienwiese this year.

Some die-hard Wiesn fans do not want to let their tradition be taken away from them.

Neither from a virus nor from the police who check whether the rules against the virus are being followed.

And for the Theresienwiese these include: an alcohol ban.

For everyone who would like to drink with alcohol as always, 50 Munich inns have a substitute program even in the pandemic year: the "Wirtshaus-Wiesn", where specially brewed beer is served in the inns in the city center, and even some Oktoberfest musicians play - of course, subject to hygiene requirements.

Munich has just exceeded the limit of 50 positive corona tests per 100,000 inhabitants within a week.

A value that virologists and politicians see with some concern, especially in a big city.

Dieter Reiter, Lord Mayor of Munich, SPD

"I am really concerned, because an incidence value over 50, whether it is 50.4 or 40.3, is definitely a very high value. We are preparing for it and are prepared for it that the number of those who become seriously ill again will rise again. That means my hospitals, the entire health system, is basically prepared. It is the difference to March. "

Now everyone has to strike the right balance between Munich tradition and health protection.

Dieter Reiter, Lord Mayor of Munich, SPD

"I don't want to be the spoilsport, but I really ask everyone to abide by the rules in order to protect themselves and, above all, the others. And the restaurant owners I can only appeal. We will check very rigorously that the rules are adhered to. Because pictures that go through the world, where people are again standing on the benches and toasting each other, without any distance, without a mask, I don't want to see them it will only exist once. "

The Munich business people try to help each other somehow.

The retail trade calls for people to shop in traditional costumes - those who shop in dirndls or lederhosen receive a beer voucher.

And after all, some showmen have been allowed to use space for their rides for weeks.

One can only hope that this year's main attraction on Theresienwiese will not get too many visitors in the coming weeks: the Corona test station.
