The Taj Mahal, closed since March due to the coronavirus, reopens its doors to visitors today, despite the contagions in India continuing to increase.
Every day there are an average of 100,000 cases and a thousand deaths, in total 5.4 million people have been infected since the beginning of the pandemic, out of a population of 1.3 billion people.
After a severe lockdown that had brought tens of millions of people left without livelihood to their knees, Narendra Modi's government has gradually reopened to travel and trade.
The Taj Mahal, the white marble mausoleum of Agra, south of New Delhi, is now open to visitors.
It is the most popular tourist site in India and in normal times it attracts seven million visitors a year.
In any case, visits will now have to comply with strict rules of social distancing and the daily number of visitors will be limited to 5,000, a quarter of the normal.
Tickets can only be purchased online and a mask and temperature control will be required.
In the rest of the country, however, particularly in rural areas where infections are on the rise, the government guidelines to limit infections are more often ignored than respected.
