Neonicotinoids: concessions from beet growers to be able to reuse these pesticides

The possible return to beet fields of neonicotinoids, banned in France since 2018, has not finished causing controversy.

In an attempt to pass the pill, the beet industry submits its "prevention plan" to the Minister of Agriculture on Tuesday, while the law re-authorizing these pesticides for these crops alone will begin to be debated in the sustainable development committee at the 'National Assembly.

In this document, which we were able to consult, the industry announces a major research program to find alternatives.

No less than 7 million euros will be allocated by the State.

Why ?

This year, the crops were particularly attacked by yellows due to green aphids, which are very numerous after a mild winter.

"We are at an impasse, we had alerted the government since 2016," said Vincent Laudinat, president of the Technical Institute of Beet (ITB).

Blame it on the ban on these pesticides depending on the sector.

To find other options, ITB scientists such as those from the National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and the Environment (INRAE) will thus examine the genomes of wild beets to create more varieties. resistant.

Others focus on the weak points of the enemy: we could plant marigolds at the edge of fields because their smell annoys aphids ...

Environmental associations are not wavering.

“The law was passed in 2016, they had two years to find solutions!

It's ridiculous, they play the clock, and the worst thing is that the fact of not having done anything allows them to say today that there is no option ”, gets angry François Veillerette, spokesperson and director of the NGO Générations futures.

"A purely cosmetic measure"

The beet plan also makes promises to limit the impact of these products if they were to be re-authorized.

"The sector is committed to reducing the quantity used in seed by 25%", announces Vincent Ladinat.

Neonicotinoids are not sprayed on plants, they coat the seeds and diffuse as the plant grows.

The beet growers also promise that, over the period 2021-2023, we can only use “neonics” on each plot for one year.

During the other two, these pesticides will not be used.

The idea is to limit soil impregnation.

"A purely cosmetic measure, even a manipulation, because all the farmers turn the crops anyway," chokes François Veillerette.

The problem is above all that these products spread for more than a year and beyond the plot.
