About 70 whales are stranded in a bay in Tasmania, an island off Australia, and a large number of experts are mobilizing in hopes of saving them.
Whales are found in Macquarie Harbor, on the island's sparsely populated and rugged west coast, where mammals are believed to have run aground on a sandbar.
"Additional crews with suitable whale rescue equipment will arrive later," the Tasmanian Department of the Environment reported.
Mass whale stranding occurs relatively often in Tasmania, but the large numbers of animals involved this time away from the prospect of a rescue.
A while ago, however, a humpback whale that got stuck in a tropical river in northern Australia managed to find its way back to the ocean on its own within two weeks.
