Despite the Corona plague crisis, which closed cinemas and film productions were halted, the academy decided to carry out the Ophir Awards ceremony, which this year will celebrate its 30th anniversary. 

The announcement of the films advancing to the finals took place today (Tuesday), and at the end of the next stage there will be a vote whose results will be announced for the winners.

The ceremony will take place this year in a different format, according to the instructions, and more details about the event will be provided later.

The film that wins the "Best Feature Film" award will represent Israel in the international category at the American Oscars.

Assaf Amir, chairman of the Israeli Academy of Film and Television, said: "Even in the most challenging period that Israeli cinema has ever known, the academy decided to promote cinematic work in Israel and hold the Ophir competition.

Along with the competition, which was mainly online due to the circumstances, we continue to work with all parties to enable the field to return to doing and creating as soon as possible.

The possibility of advancing the Ophir competition in 2021 is also being examined, in a way that will allow the winning film to conduct an effective campaign in the American Oscar competition.

The list of nominations is led by the film

"Asia"

(a film by Ruthie Perry Bar) with 13 nominations.

The film, which stars Alona Yves, Shira Haas and Tamir Mula, tells the story of Asia and Vika, the mother and daughter of the animals living their lives side by side, close but far away.

Asia, who became a mother at too young an age, has a hard time understanding and accepting the adolescent Vika.

As Vika's health deteriorates, Asia realizes that she must try and be the mother Vika so desperately needs.

Vika's situation becomes an opportunity for the two, to rediscover each other.

It is followed by 12 nominations, two films:

"The Dead of Jaffa"

and

"Aspiration for Life"

"The Dead of Jaffa" directed by Ram Levy (screenplay: the late Gilad Evron and Ala Halihal based on the story of the late Evron) and starring Yusuf Abu Varda, Ruba Balal Asfur and Salim Dow, tells the story of three children whose father is in prison, and smuggled From the West Bank to the home of Rita and George, who live in Jaffa.

"Here We Are"

(Director: Nir Bergman, Screenplay: Dana Idisis) starring Shai Avivi, Noam Imber, Smadar Wolfman, Efrat Ben Tzur.

It tells the story of Aaron, who dedicates his life to caring for his autistic son Uri, who needs to leave home for an institution and leads the two to face the breakup and a journey that will change their lives.

The film

"Africa"

finishes the top five with seven nominations.

Directed and written by: Oren Garner and starring: Meir Garner, Mia Garner, Gilad Erel and Alon Erel.

The film tells the story of Meir, a 68-year-old pensioner, an engineer by profession, who discovers that the planning of the annual celebration of the community in which he lives, a task he has faithfully fulfilled for thirty years, has been handed over to someone else.

Meir finds it difficult to cope with the loss of his relevance, and embarks on a quiet struggle in an attempt to restore the sense of vitality to his life.
