Director Julia Wissert in Dortmund: "Ultimately, most theaters are factories"

2020-09-22T22:34:54.459Z

Julia Wissert appears in Dortmund as the first black female director of a German stage - and wants to do everything differently than the powerful men on the scene. First she wants to convert her theater into a "place for everyone".

During a rehearsal break, Julia Wissert sits at a café table in a Dortmund green area, looks through large horn-rimmed glasses at children playing and their parents enjoying the evening hours - and speaks mnemonics that sound very abstract.

"Cultural institutions are part of a society in which there are not only invisible and visible prejudices, but also invisible and visible barriers," she says, for example.

And: "Classism cannot be thought of without sexism and racism."

But if you ask her whether she doesn't have to communicate with many down-to-earth people in her new job, she reports how well she has talked to many people in the city about everyday things in the past few weeks.

"I've never been to a place where people want to get in touch with me as much as in Dortmund."

She considers the city of 600,000 inhabitants to be "insanely underestimated".

Despite many rights in some parts of the city, it is a place for mainly pleasant exchange, "very loving, very warm".
