There are no drugs that alone can cure periodontotitis.

The really effective treatments are the control of bacterial plaque and in the most severe cases surgical therapy, while the useful drugs are only antibacterials and antibiotics that must be prescribed by the dentist.

This is highlighted by the new guidelines recently published by the European Federation of Periodontology relaunched by SIdP, the Italian Society of Periodontology and Implantology.

Experts explain, for the World Day of Pharmacists on 25 September, that "the support of the pharmacist becomes fundamental, as it can help in the management of the drugs recommended by the specialist and in the choice of toothbrushes and toothpastes".

The SIdP also highlights that scientific research is evaluating possible additional therapies using drugs used in the treatment of other pathologies, such as statins and metformin, which strengthen the body's immune response to improve the results of periodontal therapy, with however insufficient results so far. .

"Periodontitis - observes Luca Landi, president of SIdP - an inflammatory pathology that affects 8 million Italians, derives from a bacterial imbalance in the oral cavity that the immune response is unable to counter. first step to keep its progression under control, in the most serious cases surgical treatment is required. However, without adequate home control of bacterial plaque, tissue healing or stabilization of the gum disease cannot be achieved: the pharmacist can help in the choice of oral hygiene aids ".
