Provola dei Nebrodi becomes Dop, ok of the EU

The European Commission has approved the request for registration of "Provola dei Nebrodi" in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO). With the addition of stretched curd cheese produced in the north-east of Sicily, the number of Italian foods registered in the register of products with geographical indication protected by the EU rises to 306. BRUSSELS - The European Commission has approved the request for registration of "Provola dei Nebrodi" in the register of protected designations of origin (PDO).

With the addition of the stretched curd cheese produced in the north-east of Sicily, the Italian foods registered in the register of products with geographical indication protected by the EU rise to 306. "Provola dei Nebrodi is one of the oldest cheeses in Sicily" , reads a note from the Commission, which recognizes "the experience and know-how of the dairyman" as "determining factors for the quality and uniqueness of the product".

The denomination joins over 1,480 food products already protected by the EU. 

Bellanova, with Provola Nebrodi awarded Made in Italy quality


"Another Italian agri-food excellence becomes part of the IG Food register of the European Union: it is the Provola dei Nebrodi DOP, produced in some municipalities in the province of Catania, Enna and Messina, in Sicily".

Thus the Minister Teresa Bellanova on the inscription of the Protected Designation of Origin of the Provola dei Nebrodi.

"It is product number 306 that obtains this important recognition, underlined Bellanova, not only for the very high quality of our Made in Italy but also for the fundamental value of our agri-food traditions.
