(ANSA) - WASHINGTON, 23 SEPTEMBER - "Tough, courageous, a fighter, a winner" but also "thoughtful, attentive, compassionate, honest": this is how the head of the Supreme Court John Roberts recalled today his colleague Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the liberal and feminist icon who died in recent days at the age of 87, in the restricted ceremony with family and friends in the Great Hall of the highest American judicial body.
"His voice in the court and in our meeting room was muted but when he spoke, people listened," he added.
The judge's body was welcomed by dozens of chancellors lined up at a distance on the staircase of the monumental building and by the eight judges of the supreme court, who met for the first time after switching to video mode for the pandemic in March.
After the ceremony, a pilgrimage of thousands of people began to the funeral parlor, where the coffin lies on the falcon of President Abraham Lincoln.
Since his death last Friday, a crowd of admirers has left flowers, cards, candles, signs and drawings at the entrance to the court.
President Donald Trump's homage is also expected tomorrow, with the risk of disputes.
