Spain is in the middle of the second wave of the corona pandemic: According to the Ministry of Health, more than 10,600 infected people were last treated in hospitals, 1348 of them in intensive care units.

Corona patients thus occupy almost ten percent of the country's total clinic capacity.

The Madrid region was hit particularly hard - again.

Here, Covid 19 patients occupy every fourth free hospital bed.

There is a lack of staff and resources.

The government is trying to counteract this with stricter corona rules.

Not all Madrid residents understand this.

Juan Recio, resident of Usera, Madrid:

"I think there is no solution to closing everything and locking ourselves in at home. We have had to stay at home for three months before, I don't think people want that again."

A partial lockdown has been in effect for certain parts of Madrid since September 21: around 850,000 people are no longer allowed to leave their neighborhoods for two weeks.

Most affected are working-class areas - and thus many low-income and immigrant Madrilenians.

Antonia Moreno, resident of Useras, Madrid:

"It's bad because we can't go to our neighboring district. There are shops there that we want to go to but can't. If they want to lock us up, then please also the rest of Madrid."

Nieves Marcos, resident of Useras, Madrid:

"You don't fight the virus by locking us up, but with basic medical care where we can test for positives and negatives and isolate the people who are really infected. That's where the fight against the virus takes place."

Occasionally the police check whether the residents of the cordoned-off neighborhoods can prove that they are on their way to work, school or a hospital.

Because without the required proof, they have to stay at home.

Because of the dramatically increasing corona numbers, the regional government of

Madrid has announced

an expansion of the exit restrictions.

Further districts would be placed under restrictions on Friday.

The vice-president of the capital region announced that they would request "logistical support" from the army.
