(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 24 - The next hearing will be held the day after tomorrow, Saturday, in which it will be decided whether to further extend or not the pre-trial detention in Cairo for Patrick George Zaki, the Egyptian student of the University of Bologna in prison since last February with the accusation of subversive propaganda on the internet.

"Hearing for Patrick on Saturday. His name is on the list," a lawyer, HodaNasrallah, wrote to ANSA, without providing any other details.

At this stage of the Prosecutor's investigation into Patrick's case, if there was a renewal it would be another 45 days of imprisonment.

In Cairo, however, it was learned that yesterday the Italian Embassy made a written intervention at the Egyptian Foreign Ministry to remind that diplomatic representation closely follows the case in the context of European monitoring and continues to follow the outcome of the hearings, confident of resuming physical presence to the sessions as soon as the health situation created by the coronavirus pandemic allows it.

Diplomatic representations from other countries were involved in doing this.

Moreover, some time ago the Italian embassy itself in Cairo had written a letter to facilitate the delivery to Zaki, in prison, of some books that the family could then bring him.
