Coronavirus: more than a million dead worldwide

2020-09-28T06:26:38.877Z

The WHO estimates that this already terrible toll of more than a million deaths linked to Covid-19 could "double".

The Covid-19 pandemic has killed more than a million people, according to an AFP count established on Monday from official data.

Nine months after the detection of the new coronavirus in China, the regions most affected in terms of number of deaths are Latin America and the Caribbean (341,032 deaths for 9,190,683 cases), Europe (229,945; 5,273,943) and the United States and Canada (214,031; 7,258,663).

"A million is a terrible number," said on Friday the director of emergency situations of the World Health Organization (WHO), Michael Ryan, estimating a doubling "very likely" of this number.

Reuters, which also establishes its daily total based on official sources, currently estimates the tragic bill for the epidemic at 993,461 deaths, while the benchmark Johns Hopkins University has this Monday morning set its counter at 996,695.

If it is not already, this million victims will unfortunately not fail to be reached in the hours to come.

32.9 million cases diagnosed

Despite the containment of part of the globe, more than 32.9 million cases have been officially diagnosed since the start of the epidemic, of which at least 22.5 million are now considered cured.

On March 11, when the WHO declares the coronavirus a "pandemic", thirty countries and territories count 4,500 dead, two-thirds of them in China, but Italy and Iran are already seeing their death toll s' fly away.

Italy is the first country, outside of China, to confine its population to certain areas.

Exhausted doctors explain that faced with the influx of patients, they must choose who to treat “as in war situations”, creating a shock wave.
