A truck driver fell off a bridge into a river with his vehicle.

According to the police, the man had strayed from the road in his truck in the morning for an unexplained cause when he was on a bridge in Delbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia.

He broke through the railing and fell into the lip on a flat spot, said a spokesman.

According to the police, a subsequent driver stopped, waded through the knee-high water, climbed onto the truck, which was partly loaded with baked goods, and then helped the driver out of the cab.

Both were brought to the bank by the fire brigade using a turntable ladder.

The truck driver was then taken to a hospital.

The police initially estimated the damage at around 50,000 euros, the bridge railing had been completely destroyed.

Because of leaking oil and fuel, the fire brigade also put an oil barrier in the Lippe.

According to the investigators, the recovery of the vehicle could take until the evening, two cranes had been requested.
