(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 29 - In the case of Covid, a drug currently in use to lower blood sugar (Sitagliptin) reduces the severity and increases the survival of diabetics hospitalized for SARS-CoV-2 infection: in fact, patients under treatment with sitagliptin in addition to insulin they had a Covid mortality of 18%, compared to 37% of diabetics treated with insulin alone.

This was revealed by a study conducted last spring during the first wave of COVID in 7 Italian hospitals by Paolo Fiorina, the University of Milan and the Boston Children's Hospital.

The study, which was supported, among others, by the Lombard Section of the Italian Society of Diabetology (SID), enrolled 338 diabetic patients with Covid pneumonia, part of which treated only with insulin, the others also with sitagliptin. .

Presented in the journal Diabetes Care, the study has kicked off a clinical trial that will start soon in Europe (patient enrollment is currently underway) to see if giving the drug to a diabetic hospitalized for Covid, his prognosis improves. (the drug will be compared with a placebo).

Another clinical study in non-diabetic covid patients will follow because the mechanism of action of sitagliptin suggests that the drug works for all Covid patients.

Sitagliptin, in fact, is an inhibitor of the DPP-4 enzyme that not only controls the release of insulin but also helps the entry of SARS-CoV-2 into human cells and therefore favors the infectious process.

Furthermore, sitagliptin has an anti-inflammatory action, inhibits the production of the cytokine IL-6, which plays a role in the inflammatory storm typical of Covid syndrome.

Finally, its role in reducing blood sugar also helps against Covid. (ANSA).
