Feeding the cat once a day improves its well-being and can allow better control of its hunger than feeding it several times. To say it is a research from the University of Guelph that invites cat lovers to reduce the frequency of their meals to prevent them from becoming obese, among other things. In a paper published in the scientific journal Plos One, the researchers noted that cats who ate one meal a day were more satisfied. The study involved eight normal weight domestic cats less than 5 years old. Cats who ate only once a day had higher post-meal levels of three key appetite-regulating hormones - this would suggest their higher level of satisfaction. These cats also showed a lower fasting respiratory rate, noting that they were burning off their fat stores, which is key to maintaining lean body mass. Cats who ate only one meal a day also had a greater increase in amino acids in their blood, meaning they had more protein available to build muscle and other proteins. This, according to the researchers, is particularly important as many cats lose muscle mass as they age, experiencing a condition known as sarcopenia. (HANDLE)
